New Jersey Real Estate Market on Its Way Down? Just Ask St. Joseph

It seems as though the housing market in New Jersey has finally peeked, and is on its way down.  Well, that is if you think that recent run on St. Joseph statues in the Garden State is a leading indicator on the housing market (see the recent Star Ledger article).  There is a very old Catholic custom/superstition which states the if you bury a statue of St. Joseph (in a protective cloth) upside down in your front yard, the father of The Savior will help speed the sale of the house.  I don’t know if it actually helps, but if people are buying the statues, there is a good chance that the market has finally peeked.  But don’t tell that to my sister.  She is in the middle of buying a house along the Jersey Shore, and was outbid during the attorney review period, not once, but twice (on 2 different houses).  The third contract (and house) finally made it thru attorney review.

It took me a couple months to sell my house last year, and I bought a house in the same town (other side) that was on the market for over 6 months, so not all houses sell right away.  It just takes a savvy buyer/seller to know how to make the most out of a market.  Anyone looking to buy or sell a house in New Jersey and isn’t using the local Multiple Listing Service’s website (it varies with the MLS service), you are doing things the hard way.  Most of the northern counties are in the Garden State MLS.  You will have to search to find the other sites.

I have not heard of that custom, nor its use as an indicator. However, accross the nation I can tell you that homes are sitting longer and prices are being reduced more often than in recent history. Markets like New Jersey, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles and Orange County are seeing a dramatic change in the real estate market. Houses are sitting and saints are flying off the shelves.

About donxml

I’m an independent consultant, specializing in .Net solutions architecture, based out of New Jersey who also doubles as an evangelist for XML, Domain Driven Design, enterprise architecture and .Net. I do not work for Microsoft, the W3C or any other big company that you may know of (at least not yet). I’ve been an indie for over ten years, and although I’ve been tempted a couple times to take a job with companies like Microsoft, I’ve haven’t found something better than my current situation. I work mostly with the large pharmaceuticals that are based here in New Jersey, and usually find myself on long term contracts. Definitely not the prototypical indie consultant, but it lets me dedicate time to my non-income generating activities like the developer community stuff, plus financing open source projects like XPathmania and MVP-XML. If you would like to talk to me about doing some contract work, just contact me via the contact page. My rates vary widely, depending on lots of different variables, but mostly distance from Jersey, and type of work. Plus, I’ve been known to donate some of my code for various projects.
