Blogging For College Admissions and Scholarships

Yet another of my family has started blogging (my wife started blogging last year on her site, SqlDiva, but does not blog often enough).  I’d like to introduce you to my oldest daughter’s blog OrganizedDrama.  Actually, she has been blogging for a while over on Xanga, and I told her that if she kept up with blogging, and enjoyed it, that I would create a site for her.  On her Xanga site she kept a typical diary style blog, but she would also publish her poems.  I thought they were very good, and needed a more formal site to get the attention I thought they deserved.  While thinking about creating a blog for her I realized that if people (like myself) can use their blogs to help themselves get a job, why couldn’t you do the same thing to get yourself into college, or to help get scholarships for college?  They are very similar.  Both require some sort of resume or application, and both have an interview process, and blogging can help a potential college (or employer) get a better idea of the candidate’s personality (much better and more detailed then a resume or an interview).  Yes, you do have to be careful what you blog about (and the tone of your blog), but it’s nothing more then what you would do when holding a public conversation.

So, I didn’t think she had much to lose, and a lot to gain.  As a high school sophomore, she has plenty of time to build up a decent blog portfolio for when she is ready to apply to universities in her senior year.  I’ll let her blog about the meaning of the website name, and continue to publish her poems.  Right now there are only a few poems on the site, but if your one of my ‘net’ friends, stop by and say hi.  I’ve included the .Text moderation update on her site, and she knows all about the various predators that are lurking out there, so I’m not worried about that stuff.  She’s not a developer like my wife and I, but she does have my love for music.  She is been into forensics for a long time now, and thinks that is what she wants to go to school for, but she also loves singing and acting.  I’m not entirely happy with the look and feel of her site (it doesn’t reflect her personality), so I’m going to have to spend some time with her and create a couple new .Text skins for her.

About donxml

I’m an independent consultant, specializing in .Net solutions architecture, based out of New Jersey who also doubles as an evangelist for XML, Domain Driven Design, enterprise architecture and .Net. I do not work for Microsoft, the W3C or any other big company that you may know of (at least not yet). I’ve been an indie for over ten years, and although I’ve been tempted a couple times to take a job with companies like Microsoft, I’ve haven’t found something better than my current situation. I work mostly with the large pharmaceuticals that are based here in New Jersey, and usually find myself on long term contracts. Definitely not the prototypical indie consultant, but it lets me dedicate time to my non-income generating activities like the developer community stuff, plus financing open source projects like XPathmania and MVP-XML. If you would like to talk to me about doing some contract work, just contact me via the contact page. My rates vary widely, depending on lots of different variables, but mostly distance from Jersey, and type of work. Plus, I’ve been known to donate some of my code for various projects.
