Back To Being An Independent Consultant

My experiment as a fulltime employee is now over. Well, it has been over for over a month now, but I'm finally getting around to blogging again. I had my longest blogging hiatus (just about a month). I'm not going to get into the details, but after a couple months, I could see the writing on the wall, and knew it was only a matter of time before I was going to have to make a change. So, I'm now back to being an independent consultant, and currently have a client that is located in downtown New York City. For the last couple months, I have been struggling with what I wanted to do next. I know that I have to do something more than billing by the hour as an independent consultant, but I know that I can't just jump into it. The logical choice is to either start a new consulting firm or join a small firm. I'm leaning towards starting a new firm, but the devil is in the details, and that is where I haven't figured out the specifics. In a perfect world, I'd like to create a loose confederation of Microsoft MVPs and community influencers. But, the size would need to be kept small, to keep the overhead low. The biggest obstacle is that, well, as independents, we like to be independent.

About donxml

I’m an independent consultant, specializing in .Net solutions architecture, based out of New Jersey who also doubles as an evangelist for XML, Domain Driven Design, enterprise architecture and .Net. I do not work for Microsoft, the W3C or any other big company that you may know of (at least not yet). I’ve been an indie for over ten years, and although I’ve been tempted a couple times to take a job with companies like Microsoft, I’ve haven’t found something better than my current situation. I work mostly with the large pharmaceuticals that are based here in New Jersey, and usually find myself on long term contracts. Definitely not the prototypical indie consultant, but it lets me dedicate time to my non-income generating activities like the developer community stuff, plus financing open source projects like XPathmania and MVP-XML. If you would like to talk to me about doing some contract work, just contact me via the contact page. My rates vary widely, depending on lots of different variables, but mostly distance from Jersey, and type of work. Plus, I’ve been known to donate some of my code for various projects.
