LinkedIn.Com – Social Networking For The Corporate Crowd

In case you haven’t run into LinkedIn before, it is slowly becoming the place for the corporate crowd to cultivate their “network” of friends and associates.  I’ve been a member for quite a while, but recently I have seen a major up tick in the number of friends and associates now using LinedIn.  One of the big growth areas is in the recruiting of high level professionals (CxO all the way down to directors and very senior developers and architects).  Sites like Dice and Monster are filed with ads for looking for average developers, and if you are a senior developer or architect, you will be hard pressed to find decent paying spots on the common sites.  These upper level positions were traditional filled by “the good ol’ boy network”, and LinkedIn seems to be trying to tap into that market.  LinkedIn’s job search engine needs a little work (you can filter by zip code but they determine the radius, not you), which means you have to browse a lot of jobs that you may not be interested in.  There are a very limited number of ads within the LinkedIn site but they supplement this by crawling all the known job sites and indexing them for you too.  Eventually, I can see LinkedIn as a much improved version of Dice.

My LinkedIn profile can be found here.

LinkedIn is pretty cool, I do use it all the time for keeping up to date on what contacts are moving on to. There are a few features I wish it had, but overall it works pretty well and it's fairly easy to use.

About donxml

I’m an independent consultant, specializing in .Net solutions architecture, based out of New Jersey who also doubles as an evangelist for XML, Domain Driven Design, enterprise architecture and .Net. I do not work for Microsoft, the W3C or any other big company that you may know of (at least not yet). I’ve been an indie for over ten years, and although I’ve been tempted a couple times to take a job with companies like Microsoft, I’ve haven’t found something better than my current situation. I work mostly with the large pharmaceuticals that are based here in New Jersey, and usually find myself on long term contracts. Definitely not the prototypical indie consultant, but it lets me dedicate time to my non-income generating activities like the developer community stuff, plus financing open source projects like XPathmania and MVP-XML. If you would like to talk to me about doing some contract work, just contact me via the contact page. My rates vary widely, depending on lots of different variables, but mostly distance from Jersey, and type of work. Plus, I’ve been known to donate some of my code for various projects.
