I recently ran across a funky error when trying to upgrade one of my machines to SQL Server 2005 SP1. KB article 918357 helped me resolve it, but it does require a little registry editing. Seems as though, if you have both SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express edition installed on the same machine, and you happen to update Express to SP1 (or install SQL Server Express with Advanced Services) before updating SQL Server 2005 to SP1, they updated the SQL Server Setup Support files to a newer version, and the SQL Server 2005 SP1 install will choke on this. You could just uninstall everything and reinstall, making sure you update SQL Server 2005 to SP1 before Express, or you can follow the fix documented in Method 2 of the KB article. You just need to make sure to backup a registry entry, uninstall SQL Server Setup Support files by using Add or Remove Programs, and then reload the backed up registry setting.
I hadn't noticed any warnings from the SQL Express SP1 installer, or a warning on the download site to make sure you update SQL Server 2005 to SP1 before Express, but I would hope that Microsoft does update it soon. Sounds like I need to post a message to the private MVP SQL Server newsgroup.

About donxml
I’m an independent consultant, specializing in .Net solutions architecture, based out of New Jersey who also doubles as an evangelist for XML, Domain Driven Design, enterprise architecture and .Net. I do not work for Microsoft, the W3C or any other big company that you may know of (at least not yet). I’ve been an indie for over ten years, and although I’ve been tempted a couple times to take a job with companies like Microsoft, I’ve haven’t found something better than my current situation. I work mostly with the large pharmaceuticals that are based here in New Jersey, and usually find myself on long term contracts. Definitely not the prototypical indie consultant, but it lets me dedicate time to my non-income generating activities like the developer community stuff, plus financing open source projects like XPathmania and MVP-XML. If you would like to talk to me about doing some contract work, just contact me via the contact page. My rates vary widely, depending on lots of different variables, but mostly distance from Jersey, and type of work. Plus, I’ve been known to donate some of my code for various projects.
