TechEd 2006 Hotel Choice

For the life of me, I can’t figure out where to stay for the Boston TechEd.  I’m currently booked at the Hyatt Harborside, but I really have no desire to stay near the airport, especially when everything is towards the back bay.  I know that Jeffrey Palermo is having his 2nd annual Party with Palermo at the Hilton Boston Logan on the Saturday before TechEd, but that is only one night of activity out there.   I was going to stay at the “hidden” hotel (the one not listed on the site, but where all the speakers are staying), but that one is completely booked.  So, the next available set of hotels is either the ones near the Boston Commons, or near Copley Plaza.  Boston Park Plaza sounds decent (and I know Edgardo is booked for there), but Boston Marriott Copley Plaza might be good too.  Any of my readers feel like chiming in?

I hear that they have a pretty good rail system, so I'm not too worried about being 3 miles away. I figure I won't spend too much time in the hotel anyway. I'd even settle for a motel 6.

I'll definitely be having a Party with Palermo, but I haven't decided on a place. I doubt it will be at my hotel. Maybe a cool place in Boston to meet.

Even though you're not in the hotel all that much during the day, if I'm staying anywhere for a week, I'd like it to be comfortable. I wound up going with the Radisson.

I had called all the hotels to go over features and amenities (since some items weren't always listed on the web), and put together a list online: http://www.ladewig.com/teched-2006-hotels.htm

Hey bud, most of the hotels in the copely plaza commons area are top notch...pricey too!
I have stayed at the Marriot and it was very nice and central to the city, don't foget you have very easy access to the "T" subway/trolley system to get anywhere inexpensively and quickly. You practically never have to go outisde, although a walk down Newberry and Charles streets is always worth it for the eclectic shops including a vintage vinyl style place if it is still there. Have fun.

So Don, where did you decide to stay? I enjoyed meeting you and Melissa at the JW Marriot last year.

Alan,
I haven't decided, that is why I haven't announced it. Currently, I'm booked at the Boston Marriott Copley Place, and odds are that I'll be staying there, but there is the slim chance that I'll get switched to the speakers hotel.

Oh, and Melissa can't make it this year. She switched employers this year and decide to go to SQL Pass in Seattle instead of TechEd this year.

Too bad, we'll miss the SQLDiva.

I went for the Hotel Marlowe across the river in Cambridge. Boston is soooooo much more interesting than Orlando. I decided to stay some place that forced me to see the city. Also, I've never seen a Marriott with this kind of funky decor :-P

I'll look for you in Boston.

I’m an independent consultant, specializing in .Net solutions architecture, based out of New Jersey who also doubles as an evangelist for XML, Domain Driven Design, enterprise architecture and .Net. I do not work for Microsoft, the W3C or any other big company that you may know of (at least not yet). I’ve been an indie for over ten years, and although I’ve been tempted a couple times to take a job with companies like Microsoft, I’ve haven’t found something better than my current situation. I work mostly with the large pharmaceuticals that are based here in New Jersey, and usually find myself on long term contracts. Definitely not the prototypical indie consultant, but it lets me dedicate time to my non-income generating activities like the developer community stuff, plus financing open source projects like XPathmania and MVP-XML. If you would like to talk to me about doing some contract work, just contact me via the contact page. My rates vary widely, depending on lots of different variables, but mostly distance from Jersey, and type of work. Plus, I’ve been known to donate some of my code for various projects.
